"Whether you’re hiring a removal company or borrowing one from a friend, many movers end up making more trips than they anticipated, often due to a lack of preparation or underestimating the scale of the job."

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of UK home movers say poor planning or logistical issues caused them to lose time during their move, according to a new survey from temporary van insurance provider Tempcover.
The study of 2,000 movers shows that 40% lost between four and nine hours throughout the process, with many underestimating how many trips they would need.
One major misconception involved the number of journeys required. While 31% expected to complete their move in just one or two trips, only 26% managed to do so. This suggests many people underestimated how much they had or the space they required. First-time renters were especially affected: 47% admitted they misjudged the number of trips because they didn’t have access to a van or larger vehicle, causing significant delays.
Moving often takes longer than expected. Although 17% finished their move in a day, most (83%) needed more time. Nearly a third (29%) required up to two days, 23% took between three and six days, 12% spent a full week to 10 days, and 18% reported their move lasting two weeks or more.
In addition to logistical challenges, packing proved the most time-consuming task for 43% of respondents. Decluttering followed, taking up the most time for 24%, and also ranked as one of the most stressful parts of moving (31%). Packing was the top stressor for 32%, while transport logistics and leaving familiar surroundings were also concerns.
The survey also found that many movers struggle emotionally with the transition. Over a third (37%) said it takes a month or longer to feel settled, and 8% of experienced renters still don’t feel at home in their new property.
Tempcover recommends several ways to reduce moving stress:
Borrow a bigger vehicle: More than one in three movers regretted not having access to a van or larger vehicle. Borrowing one is an option, but make sure temporary insurance is in place.
Plan ahead and list belongings: Taking stock early and including extra time for delays helps create a realistic plan.
Declutter before packing: Donating or selling unwanted items reduces what needs moving and could even raise some money.
Label boxes clearly: Clear labelling saves time unpacking and prevents losing important items.
Ask for help: Getting support from friends and family can ease the workload and improve the process.
“One of the most common issues people face when moving is underestimating how much space they’ll actually need to transport their belongings," explained Claire Wills-Mckissick, expert in temporary van insurance at Tempcover. "Whether you’re hiring a removal company or borrowing one from a friend, many movers end up making more trips than they anticipated, often due to a lack of preparation or underestimating the scale of the job."
