"While lower costs should be welcome news for homeowners, it’s important not to focus on price alone. With forecasts of unsettled weather ahead, households should check that their policies offer the right levels of cover for their needs"

Average home insurance premiums fell by 13% year-on-year in September, dropping from £226 in 2024 to £197 in 2025.
The most notable decreases were recorded in the North East and East Midlands, while Northern Ireland was the only region to see an increase.
According to the latest data from Compare the Market, the average cost of home insurance in September 2025 fell by 13% compared with the same month in 2024. The most significant reductions were seen in the North East and East Midlands, both down by 15%. The North West, Scotland, and the West Midlands also recorded declines of 14%.
Northern Ireland was the only region where premiums rose, increasing by 9%. The highest home insurance costs in September 2025 were found in Northern Ireland (£482), followed by Yorkshire and the Humber (£328) and Greater London (£308). These three regions also had the highest premiums in 2024.
The most affordable areas were the North East (£152), the East of England (£159), and the West Midlands (£169).
Although falling premiums will be welcomed by many homeowners, the report highlights the value of reviewing existing policies. Comparing deals can help households save further and ensure their cover remains suitable as winter approaches.
The Met Office has forecast a ‘wetter than average’ autumn, with several parts of the country already experiencing almost double their usual rainfall in September. The forecast suggests above-average rain and wind for the coming months, increasing the risk of flooding in some regions.
Flood cover is usually included as standard in most home insurance policies, but it remains worthwhile for homeowners to review their policy wording or contact their insurer to confirm the level of protection they have. Key areas to check include:
Cover for alternative accommodation
Flood damage when a property is unoccupied for a period
Exclusions relating to fences, gates, or hedges
“It’s encouraging to see home insurance premiums falling,” said Sam Wilson, expert at Compare the Market. “However, while lower costs should be welcome news for homeowners, it’s important not to focus on price alone. With forecasts of unsettled weather ahead, households should check that their policies offer the right levels of cover for their needs."
"It's also a good idea to shop around and compare deals as they may get a better price on their premium. Taking a few minutes to review your cover and comparing them against different policies online could make a difference.”
