According to the lender, the new incentive is available now and customers who take mortgage products directly from Halifax could earn either £1000 cashback for installing a heat source pump, or £500 for other energy efficiency home improvements.

The new scheme is available to those buying a home as well as remortgage and existing mortgage customers who are looking to finance green home improvements. The energy efficiency improvements that can be claimed against fall into five types: low carbon heating, insulation, windows and doors, heating controls, and solar energy.

Examples of work that qualifies for the cashback include solar PV panels, solar battery storage, floor insulation, and fitting insulated external doors.

Once registered, borrowers simply need to complete a form and provide a copy of their tradesperson’s invoice to claim their Green Living Reward. Customers can choose any company to complete the work, there is no obligation to use a specific service provider.

Together with the launch of the new Green Living Reward, Halifax is launching a free customer Home Energy Efficiency Helpline in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, which will sit alongside the existing free online Energy Saving Tool. The new telephone helpline will offer impartial advice and guidance to help homeowners better understand how they can make their homes warmer and greener. The helpline, 0808 196 8258, is open Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm (except public holidays).

Andrew Asaam, Mortgages Director, Halifax, said: “As part of our commitment to help Britain hit Net Zero, we are keen to incentivise the move to greener homes. As building standards drive up the energy efficiency of new homes, we believe it is essential we also support the changes needed to make the existing housing stock more environmentally friendly.

“The Green Living Reward supports home buyers and owners, who are looking to make their homes warmer and greener with cashback when they make energy-efficient home improvements, in addition to any government grants available.”
