According to the study carried out for mortgage and loans provider Ocean Finance 47% live within 15 miles of their parental home.
Figures also show that Northerners are the most likely to remain true to their roots. Almost two-thirds (63%) of those from the North East still live within 15 miles away of where they grew up. This is mirrored by those living in the North West (54%), Yorkshire (54%) and Scotland (52%).

For nearly a third of adults, the radius is set within five miles when searching for their new home. The number of those not willing to venture more than five miles has increased from about a quarter (23%) in 2013, when similar research was conducted.
Fewer than a quarter (23.5%) of adults live more than 100 miles away from their childhood home. This is most common amongst residents of the South West (44%), East Midlands (34%) and South East (28%), the research shows.
Ian Williams, a spokesperson for Ocean Finance, said: “We know that there is strong regional pride in the UK, particularly amongst Northerners. Still, it’s really surprising that so many people choose to stay close to where they grew up.
One explanation is that people want to stay close to their family and childhood friends, and also, to give their children a similar upbringing to their own.
Those who do move further afield may be in search of better job prospects or a better standard of living.”
