During Q2, 26,808 homes were registered in the private sector compared to 28,964 during the equivalent period the previous year.
In the affordable sector, registrations rose 7% to 12,170 new homes compared to Q2 2017.
Total registrations during the quarter dipped 3% to 38,978 new homes.
London saw a fall of 17% to 2,917 new homes registered during the period. Regions seeing increases in registrations include Northern Ireland at a 49% rise compared to a year ago, the Eastern region (+27%) and Yorkshire & Humberside (+19%).
Steve Wood, NHBC CEO, said: “We have seen some promising numbers coming through, in particular during May and June. The demand for new homes across the UK remains strong, so this is encouraging news for the industry and for consumers who are looking to buy a brand new home.”
