Home security is at the top of many homeowners’ priority lists, but can the same be said for their gardens and backyards?

Shockingly, 27% of Brits don’t lock their garden gates or backyard doors. Some don’t even close them properly, according to new research.

The majority admitted to never locking their garden gate. Most of the time, it’s a broken padlock that’s the most common reason for people leaving their gardens and backyards unsecured.

The cost of padlocks vs. the cost of items in our gardens

80% of those surveyed admitted to leaving some items in their gardens, with garden furniture topping the list. This is followed by gardening tools and equipment, bikes, and kids outdoor toys.

Surprisingly, only 7% said they keep all of their garden items inside overnight.

The survey’s regional data also highlighted some interesting findings. For example, 23% of Welsh residents claim they do not have any items in their gardens worth securing.

On the other hand, Yorkshire respondents are the most security conscious. 10% say they bring all their items inside to ensure that burglars don’t target their gardens.

Robert Fernandez, a spokesperson for Rattan Direct, says: “Securing our gardens and backyards should be top of the list of priorities. Every single homeowner or tenant should invest in a padlock to protect those items that are often left outside overnight. Replacing stolen items can be very expensive, even if you feel they hold very little value in the first place.”
